Burn More Fat with Fasted Infrared Workouts

April 26, 2026

As a trainer, I am a proponent of intermittent fasting using a 16 hour period of fasting each day with an 8 hour or less window for eating. Usually this involves a lunchtime first meal and the last meal around 7 or 8 p.m. This can set you up for powerful fat burning fasted infrared workouts in the mornings before the first daily meal.

A fasted workout inside an infrared sauna creates a supercharged metabolic environment that can amplify fat burning far beyond what most people experience in a typical session, especially when practiced in a fasted state. When you train in a fasted state, your body has lower circulating insulin levels and reduced immediate glucose availability, which encourages it to shift toward utilizing stored fat for fuel. Now layer in the effect of infrared energy absorption and heat, and the equation changes dramatically. Infrared energy penetrates the body and elevates core temperature more efficiently than traditional heated environments. This means you can achieve a heightened calorie burn—and more importantly, a greater percentage of fat oxidation in less time.

Inside an infrared sauna workout like those used in HOTWORX’s 3D Training Method, the combination of isometric holds and high-intensity intervals further compounds this effect. The heat and infrared penetration acts as a metabolic accelerator, while the fasted state acts as a fuel selector, pushing the body to tap into fat stores more readily. As your body works to regulate temperature, it expends additional energy through thermoregulation, and this added demand continues even after the session ends through excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), often referred to as the “afterburn.” In a fasted infrared session, that afterburn is more likely to be fueled by fat, creating a dual-phase fat-burning effect—during the workout and in the one hour recovery window that follows.

Beyond the immediate calorie burn, fasted infrared training supports improved metabolic flexibility over time, training your body to efficiently switch between fuel sources depending on demand and fasted state. This is critical for long-term body composition changes and sustained energy levels. The controlled stress of heat exposure introduces a hormetic response, stimulating adaptations such as improved mitochondrial efficiency and enhanced circulation, both of which play roles in how effectively the body mobilizes and burns fat. When approached with consistency and proper hydration, a fasted infrared sauna workout becomes more than just a routine—it becomes a strategic tool to unlock greater fat-burning potential while delivering the signature benefit of getting more workout in less time.
