Get Your Mind Right! Improving Workout Focus with Infrared

March 15, 2026

One of the reasons I designed the HOTWORX® infrared workout sauna was to provide a tool to help with workout focus. Inside the infrared sauna, the setting is more private, intimate, and limited to no more than three clients. With the infrared energy and heat at 125°F, enhancing the ability to be present at the moment for all your workouts, your training sets will be more engaging. Your mental connection with your body movement in these small-group training sessions will always be higher than that of open, air-conditioned workout rooms packed with too many people.

I am reminded of one of my off-season coaches who helped me train for arena football. Coach Duke used to always tell us to “get your mind right” to keep us focused on what our bodies were doing. Rather than just showing up for a workout and going through the motions, make a conscious effort to bring your level of awareness up to connect your thoughts with the movements of your body! Focus your thoughts inward and about your muscles doing the work. Zone in on balance and form. Your brain sends signals to your muscles, and you should ensure that there is no distraction for this connection. I am reminded of one of our motivational posters: FIND YOUR FOCUS!

Yoga is one of the most effective methods of exercise to foster a mind/body connection. Yoga requires an incredible amount of focus, and infrared hot yoga can take it to another level. Yoga postures force you to concentrate on balance, which requires mental presence. Other forms of isometrics work well too for this purpose. It takes a full-on awareness of the mind in connection to the muscle to hold a balancing isometric posture.

With the HOTWORX® yoga workout, immediately after the modified sun salutation warm-up, we open the posture sequence with eagle pose. Eagle is a good example of an exercise that requires a high level of mind/body connection for balance and power in a posture that is held over an extended amount of time. Power, according to Webster’s, is the ability to act or produce an effect. So, for more power to move and to deliver fitness results to yourself, practice the integration of mind and body.

You can experience more fitness power when your mind and body work together as one.
What about the science behind the mind/body connection? Modern exercise science supports the importance of the mind-muscle connection. Research has shown that when individuals consciously focus on the muscle being trained, muscle fiber activation can increase significantly. This enhanced neural activation originates in the motor cortex of the brain, which sends electrical signals through the nervous system to recruit muscle fibers.

The more focused your mind is on the movement, the more efficiently your body recruits motor units—groups of muscle fibers controlled by a single nerve. Greater motor unit recruitment leads to stronger contractions, better muscular control, and more effective workouts.
Balance-focused exercises such as yoga, Pilates and other isometric training amplify this neurological connection. Holding a posture forces the brain to constantly communicate with stabilizing muscles throughout the body. This continuous neural feedback loop strengthens coordination, stability, and muscular endurance.

Infrared can further enhance this experience. When the body is exposed to infrared energy, blood flow increases and muscles warm more deeply than with traditional convection heat. Increased circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients to working muscles while also helping remove metabolic waste. At the same time, the warm, controlled environment encourages relaxation and mental clarity, making it easier to focus attention inward and on what the body is working on the outside.

Another interesting physiological factor is that exercise and heat exposure both stimulate the release of endorphins and other neurotransmitters that elevate mood and sharpen mental awareness. When your body feels energized and your brain is fully engaged, the mind/body connection becomes even stronger.

When you train with the mind and body working together, exercise becomes more than just physical activity—it becomes a performance of precision, awareness, and control. Every repetition becomes intentional. Every posture becomes purposeful. This integration creates power! And, there within lies the difference between simply exercising and truly training.

When you step into a workout with focused attention, controlled breathing, and complete awareness of your movements, you unlock a higher level of performance. Strength increases faster, balance improves, and your workouts become more efficient and rewarding.

So before your next workout, remember Coach Duke’s advice: get your mind right. Clear the distractions. Focus your thoughts. Feel every movement. Connect your brain to every muscle fiber. Because when the mind and body work together as one, you unlock a level of power that most people never experience.

Mind + body as one can be an infrared fitness power play to get you to the
best workout results of your life.
