What is a SMART Fitness Goal?

It’s not enough to just say you want to lose 20 pounds. In fitness, as in business, everything should be based on a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound) goal.

SPECIFIC + TIME-BOUND

First, you need to start with what the goal actually is. Here’s another acronym for you. You have go establish a personal fitness BHAG (Big Harry Audacious Goal) and set your deadline. The goal needs to be “harry” enough that you actually have to reach for it. Don’t set a patsy goal. In business we call that sand-bagging when you set a wimpy goal. Make it achievable and believable but not easy. Dream big. Then you have to go out and find the right tools that can help you get to your BHAG on time.

Here’s a fitness BHAG example. Let’s say you want to lose 20 pounds before the vacation wedding that you are attending which happens to be three months away. What to do? First, tell a couple of people that losing that 20 is your 90 day fitness mission and that will satisfy the “S” in SMART and force you to be accountable to your friends. Then set the actual date that you want to have that weight loss goal accomplished and that will take care of the “T”. In this wedding event example, I would suggest that the time-bound date should be one week before the event to give you time to try on and buy your new clothes that will fit your new body!

I want to emphasize that most importantly, the goal must have a deadline that you are absolutely committed to. It must be “time-bound”!

That takes care of the S and T. What about the MAR?

MEASURABLE + ACHIEVABLE +  RELEVANT

Be sure to fire up your fitness tracker, and sync it with the HOTWORX Burn Off App so that you can measure your progress. We have a thing in business called a KPI, Key Performance Indicator. You need a KPI in fitness and that KPI is your calorie burn and post-workout after-burn combined with your calorie intake. Learn what you need to know about the KPI’s, and try to reach the HOTWORX Level 6 and now Level 7 on your way to that 20 pound 90 day weight loss goal.

Your goal needs to be achievable, so make it within reason and doable based on what others have been able to accomplish, and keep it relevant to your event. Focus on being ready for your event and you will kill it!

Now you have the complete SMART goal. What next?

I wrote a blog about fitness visualization recently. You have to visualize how good you will look at that event and then you will believe that you can hit your goal. Once you can see it, then you will believe it! We have a saying at HOTWORX and it goes like this regarding goals:

BELIEVE, DO, ACHIEVE, REPEAT!

The key word in that phrase is DO. You can have a perfect SMART goal, but if you don’t do the work to get there, the goal is just a pipe dream.

Once you have made the commitment to your fitness BHAG, then you have to take MASSIVE, CONSISTENT, ACTION on your weekly fitness routine. You will also need to find the right tools that can help to achieve what you want in a faster and more efficient manner. The most efficient workout on the planet is provided at HOTWORX. The 3D Training method that was developed by HOTWORX combines exercise with heat and infrared energy to deliver, as the brand says, MORE WORKOUT, LESS TIME.

So, remember SMART fitness goal setting for your next event, and stack the odds in your favor with the right fitness tools this time!
