High Intensity Interval Training, aka HIIT, usually consists of a warmup then 30 second intervals of high intensity sets involving the use of some type of cardio machine. Cardio machines are not necessary but are useful tools to facilitate the interval sets. The high intensity sets are followed by lowered intensity sets that take usually take up only 50% of the time of a higher intensity interval. For example, a 30 second high intensity set would be followed by a 15 second lower intensity set of medium or low tension and/or effort. Lower intensity sets allow for a clearing out of the lactic acid so that the individual can proceed to another high intensity set.

Let’s begin with what the word isometric means. According to the Merriam Webster online dictionary, the definition as related to fitness is an adjective meaning anything “of, relating to, involving, or being muscular contraction (as in isometrics) against resistance, without significant shortening of muscle fibers, and with marked increase in muscle tone.”¹

The old school way of getting your cardio in reminds me of the rock band Creed song “My Own Prison”. I am sure there are many people like me who have spent countless hours on various cardio machines such as treadmills and stair steppers slaving away painfully, step after step after step. Yes, you know what I mean.

Over the past three years I have written many articles concerning infrared and fitness. Sometimes I am still asked very basic questions such as “what is infrared?” And, sometimes, well, actually more than just sometimes, I am still looked at with a deer in the headlights expression when I begin to explain “infrared fitness”.

I have written about this before, but I will continue to write on this topic to remind myself and blog readers of the importance of this simple fitness strategy. Vacations are the greatest motivators of all to get people moving towards a fitness objective. I write this blog post today from Park City, Utah during one such vacation. Obviously my trip involves snow skiing.

I was recently asked by one of our employees in Chicago whether or not infrared exposure is good for treatment of seasonal affective disorder, aka SAD.“Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.”¹

Product and service integrity is always of paramount importance no matter what industry. I would argue that this is especially the case with the fitness industry. Without the establishment of workout types and methods, workout chaos and schizophrenia ensues. When new workout types and methods are created, it is then important for those to form into a discipline.

There is an epidemic in the fitness industry today and it is a “plague” known as workout consistency ignorance! As the old saying goes, Ignorance is Bliss! In fitness, though, it is not bliss. It causes chaos.

I hear it everywhere I go when I visit a new HOTWORX 24 Hour Infrared Fitness Studio…Customers tell me, ”I feel so good and so energized when I finish an infrared workout”.

Fitness Studio Air Quality matters, especially for hot yoga, pilates and other forms of hot exercise. Most fitness centers that incorporate some form of heated studio into their fitness programming use traditional heating that is blown in by an HV/AC system. This type of heating relies on the pumping of hot air into a room in the effort to raise the temperature of the workout environment. The problem with this is the air quality. Air blown from venting is processed and dirty. To add to the issue, when the air is blown through the vents as it is pushed out through a furnace and it is loud.

The HOTWORX concept began with the idea that a sauna could be designed so that clients could experience hot yoga with infrared heat. That 63 square foot sauna design was a success, but a by-product of that innovation was the realization that the HOTWORX sauna could be used in a setting that allowed for 24 hour fitness usage. Thus, the 24 hour infrared fitness studio was born into existence on Feb. 13, 2017 in Oxford, MS with the opening of the first HOTWORX Studio…and with that, the world’s first studio for 24 hour hot yoga (and more) became a reality.

Heated workouts in the form of hot yoga have been around for half a century and those hot yoga sessions have been almost exclusively delivered inside of studios heated with conventional HV/AC equipment. This type of environment is loud from the heater fans and stuffy from the hot air that is being blown everywhere. Furthermore, this old school heat only warms the outside of the human body to cause sweat. It’s just hot air, literally.

Let’s just cut the crap. Doing cardio is hard, and it can turn into a dull, boring grind if you keep doing it the old school way. That is, by working endless minutes on the treadmill, elliptical or stationary bike.

High Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT, in normal outdoor climates or in air-conditioned indoor workout environments, when done properly is a very effective addition to any fitness routine. However, when HIIT is combined with infrared energy and heat, the human body responds with a supercharge to its metabolism and with the extra advantage of accelerated detox!

It’s college football bowl season and time for the national championship, and it’s playoff time for the NFL. Of course, the talk of who might win the Super Bowl is in the air as well. The beginning of each new year is filled with championship spirit and discussions of what it takes to win.

Hot yoga is an awesome form of isometric fitness training. It has been around for about 50 years now with its origins in Japan as developed and first practiced by the now infamous Bikram Choudhury. Many excellent forms of hot yoga have since been created and are now practiced throughout the world.

I would advocate that the fitness industry is one of the best industries to enter into as an entrepreneur. There are many obvious reasons, but what I will focus on for this article is popularity and population growth.

Just left an incredible corporate retreat for HOTWORX in Punta Cana… So, as I’m sitting in the plane on my flight home, I pondered for a topic before I began typing and it dawned on me to share a fitness story about my trip. On Saturday, the last full day of the vacation, myself and Jeremy Harwell (Jeremy is General Manager of the HOTWORX in Oxford, MS) took a surfing excursion. I had planned for this excursion in my mind for several months prior to this day.

One point that is not impressed upon enough by trainers and fitness writers is the advantage of mixing pre and post workout supplements with water for your workout hydration needs. Proper hydration and supplementation is especially important for infrared training.

I attended a functional training seminar recently at the Athletic Business Show that was held in New Orleans. The room was filled with trainers from all over the country. Most of the crowd in attendance was affiliated with the military either active duty, or non-military contract fitness trainers. The presenter, Anthony Wall, representing the American Council on Exercise (ACE), delivered a powerful and interactive speech on functional training.

Markets are driven by value. Customers constantly ask themselves, whether deliberately or intuitively, “how can I get more quality for less money, or how can I get more results in a shorter amount of time?” The brands who can deliver on this customer need will change industries and move markets.

Have you taken a look at the weight room in any of the newer “big box” health clubs lately? What you will likely see is way less square footage devoted to heavy weight machines of the selectorized or plate load types. More and more of the weight room floor space is now being occupied by functional training equipment.
